Heavy Snowstorm Causes Massive Power Outages, Traffic Disruptions in Ukraine

A severe snowstorm hit Ukraine overnight Monday, causing traffic disruptions and power outages in seventeen regions, authorities said.

A total of 1,638 settlements in Ukraine have been left without electricity after the snowfall and winds damaged power grids, the country’s Energy Ministry said on its Facebook page.

Ukraine’s southern Odesa and Mykolaiv regions, the central Dnipropetrovsk region, and the northern Kiev region were affected the most by the blizzard, said the ministry.

In the Odesa region, at least five people were injured after trees fell on them during the snowstorm, while eight others got hypothermia, said the State Service for Emergencies (SSE).

The heavy snow also caused the closure of 13 automobile roads across Ukraine, the SSE said on Telegram.

According to the SSE, a total of 1,215 disaster-relief personnel and 330 units of equipment have been deployed in Ukraine to clear the snow.
