Iraqi Base Housing U.S. Forces Hit by Barrage of Rockets

A barrage of rockets struck on Thursday a military airbase housing U.S. military experts and agencies in Iraq’s western province of Anbar, an Iraqi army source said.

The attack occurred in the evening when an undetermined number of rockets landed in the Ayn al-Asad Airbase near the town of al-Baghdadi, some 190 km northwest of the capital Baghdad, causing no casualties, an officer from the Iraqi army told Xinhua on condition of anonymity.

The source said that after the attack, the Iraqi security forces found a rocket launcher while combing the areas surrounding the airbase, adding that the troops were able to defuse two rockets that were ready to be launched.

An armed group calling itself “the Islamic Resistance in Iraq” claimed the attack in an online statement.

The statement, the authenticity of which could not be independently verified, said the rockets hit their targets without providing further details.

Earlier on Thursday, the same group claimed responsibility for launching drone and rocket attacks on Thursday morning on two U.S. military bases in eastern Syria.
