Heavy Snowfall Hits Hungary, Causing Disruptions

The heavy snowfall that began Wednesday evening and continued overnight was still causing disruptions in central and western Hungary on Thursday afternoon.

The country’s National Directorate General for Disaster Management said on Thursday morning that its units had been dispatched to 300-odd incidents, mainly caused by fallen trees and branches.

Train and bus passengers had to face heavy delays. Buses had trouble negotiating roads in the hilly western parts of Hungary. The Hungarian news agency MTI reported that buses had been stranded for several hours, typically because of fallen trees or disabled trucks blocking the way.

Train services were also heavily disrupted on Thursday, especially in the western and northeastern parts of the country, the railway company MAV said.

In the capital Budapest, the municipal maintenance company (FKF) has been continuously clearing the streets. The priority is to clear bridges, overpasses, highways and the main entrances of major traffic routes, according to a press release sent by the municipality.

The capital city’s Ferenc Liszt International Airport may experience minor delays, but operations are running smoothly.
