Tajikistan and Kyrgyzstan did not provide each other with grants for studying at universities in 2022

Tajikistan and Kyrgyzstan in 2022, for the first time in the history of relations, did not provide each other with grants for studying at universities, this was reported on February 2 at a press conference at the Ministry of Education and Science of Tajikistan.

According to the director of the Center for International Programs of the Ministry of Education and Science of Tajikistan, Ramazon Odinazod, before that, grants were allocated annually on the basis of an intergovernmental agreement.

According to him, today 42 students from Tajikistan continue to study in Kyrgyzstan, the rest have transferred to Tajikistan and continue their education in domestic universities.

Odinazoda noted that students from Kyrgyzstan studying in Tajikistan “do not face any problems.” However, he did not specify how many students from the neighboring country study in Tajik universities.

When Dushanbe and Bishkek will again start accepting students from Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan, respectively, is not reported. The director of the Center for International Programs of the Ministry of Education and Science believes that this will become possible “after the restoration of good neighborly relations.”

It is reported that problems with studying in Kyrgyzstan for Tajik students began in May 2021. Then Kyrgyzstan closed its borders to citizens of Tajikistan after the border conflict that occurred at the end of April 2021.

In general, relations between Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan have deteriorated sharply over the years after two major armed clashes on the border, which killed dozens of people on both sides.
